Game designing and graphic design are not the same, but they are related fields that often work together in the game development process. Game designing and Graphic designing are a part of Communication Design, but two has very different bifurcations in-terms of courses and skill sets requirement. Game designing is a vast domain in itself, within game designing you have interactive motion design, animation, character design, game play design, environment design, 3D, visual graphics, etc. So, in order to be a game designer you need to identify your core interest within these respective areas.
