Not at all. CAT tests you on the 10th standard maths, data interpretation and English. You can purchase books like Arun Sharma or take some coaching material like that of time and study on your own. Take mocks and go for cat.

No, it is not at all necessary. Self study is all that matters. But take mock tets daily. Here are some good books which can be used for CAT preparation :
1.How to prepare for Data Interpretation for the CAT   TMH / Arun Sharma
2.Pearson Guide to Quantitative Aptitude and Data Intrepretation for CAT by Nishit Sinha
    3.Quantum CAT by Sarvesh Verma

No doubt, you have to study books on your own to face the Test. But, you see, for speed practice, coaching may become necessary. You can't get any interaction at home. So, you won't know how others are doing. So, it is good, if you go for coaching.

Gentleman, i feel its necessary to visit a coaching class for preparing CAT when it comes to practice mock papers and learn time management. otherwise the topics can be learned from available books in market. good number of quality books are available in the market. best of luck.
