Gujarat University is a public state university. It receives funding from the government and was established under the Gujarat University Act, 1949, which falls under the purview of the state government.

Although, some colleges affiliated with Gujarat University might be private, the university itself is a public institution.

Gujarat University is a public-state university established in 1949, making it one of the oldest and the largest universities in India. It is recognised by the University Grants Commission of India (UGC) and operates under the Gujarat University Act of 1949, which grants it power and privileges from the State Legislative. Therefore, Gujarat University is a government university, not a private one.
