IIMs are autonomous institutes under the aegis of the HRD ministry of the Government of India. They are aided financially by the HRD ministry however they are fairly autonomous in their administrative and academic conduction. Each IIM has a seperate Board and a chairperson (most of them reputed industrialists and/or academicians with few HRD ministry nominations on the board. IIMs run like a company with the Director being the administrative head where as the Programme chairman is the academic head.
