    Yes, the Indian Maritime University (IMU) is a government university. It was established in November 2008 by an Act of Parliament. The university is sponsored by the Ministry of Shipping, Government of India. 
     
    The IMU is a Central University that falls under the control of the Indian Government's Ministry of Shipping. It is also a member of the International Organization of Maritime Universities (IAMU).
