If you personally have interest in finance then you should definitely go for it. We have 1-2 mechanical engineering students in our class with core work-experience and approximately half of the class has engineering background.

You can give away that one year of work experience to learn and explore about something you like. Never know, you can amalgamate your knowledge of engineering and finance to create something new.
