Is it beneficial for an engineering student to pursue an MA in economics or sociology?

For an engineering student, it is quite tough to go for Masters in Economic as in whole academic period, students study PCM and no economics, but in Master's degree, a student has to get in-depth knowledge in this subject and needs an introduction to economics before joining MA in Economics. As Economics is a complex subject so after a small introduction to an economics student can get some base for the syllabus and understand the syllabus easily. So, it is beneficial to do MA in economics as less engineering student do this and there is a scope in the finance field, industries, and banking & marketing field. MA in sociology is the study of social relation, social satisfaction, social interaction and culture. So it is quite easy for a B.Tech student to study MA Sociology rather than MA Economics. A student having good knowledge and understanding can easily go through MA in Sociology. It is quite easy to score good marks in Sociology. After doing this, students can go for PhD. or M.Phil degree. Sociology student has a greater chance to qualify civil services exam or one can also apply for UGC-NET or JRE exam. S, for engineering students, MA in Sociology is quite beneficial.

If you wish to appear for exams conducted by UPSC after completing MA in economics and sociology then this is course is surely made for you. You can pursue the same without thinking twice. Sociology: It is one of the most fetching subjects for a serious UPSC aspirant. This is borne out by the fact that: 1. Sociology is, per se, nothing but the study of society. So, in case even if you don't know the technical answer like another subject, you just write a layman answer and still you will get marks. 2. Further, you will never get zero marks in sociology unless you have not written anything in the paper. 3. You can easily use any newspaper article and just bash it. Make a reference to an editor/writer and just write whatever he has said and give a conclusive judgment in the end and you will get good marks. 4. Sociology as an optional may also help to get good marks in the essay and social issues part of all subjects like policy/policy making, history (about various movements). Economics: Firstly, there is no definitive end to which you can study a particular topic mentioned in the syllabus of economics. Second, the questions in Paper 1 don't stick to the defined syllabus. While it is possible that a student of economics might have heard about the asked term/theory somewhere, it becomes next to impossible for someone who has just prepared the given syllabus for the exam. However, having said that, Paper 2 largely revolves around a similar pattern and can be prepared easily if you are interested in following Indian economy. It is very intuitive and helps in GS as well. So, ultimately, you need to take your call based on the strength of your inclination towards economics.
