Devoting one full year for JEE preparation has its own merits and demerits. Dropping a year means that you will get sufficient amount of time to prepare for JEE and other engineering competitive exams. It will allow you take mock up test and help to score good ranking in competitive exams. However, one year is a long time so the possibility of you may change your goals and objectives. You may become lethargic because of availability of time and lesser pressure. You may waste time. If you are confident of keeping the momentum, dedication, determination, readiness to work on a plan, will to achieve your objective and support of family; y

If you are not getting even tier 3 colleges and determined enough to crack JEE Advanced next year than I will suggest you to drop a year. But you should never repeat the mistakes which you did last year.
Start a fresh preparation and make a list of important topics. Categorise them into 3 sub categories:
    1. Strong Topics: You can place topics in which you are confident enough to solve even the toughest questions. Just go through these topics as quickly as possible.
    2. Average topics: Work on these topics and convert these topics into stronger one. Solve quality questions.
    3. Weak topics: You have to work very very hard on these topics.Leav

As already pointed out by my fellow students taking a drop has its own merits and demerits.
But before starting I would like to mention that whenever I would be referring to 'average college' it would be in regards with tier 1 government colleges which are among top 3 among their respective states.
So let's take the example of my own two friends who took a drop, one of them was getting a tier one college in Maharashtra in the first attempt but he rejected that offer and took a drop year. He got into one of newer IITs (one of which almost no one has ever heard about). In this case, I would say it was a waste of one year. He should have g

If you're pursuing engineering, there's one thing I'd like to tell you, from my own experience - never settle for an average college right away. There are way more colleges than what people hear about, and most of them are in the so called 'average' category. These colleges aren't worth it. Try aiming for something higher. Target the IITs and you might land up in an NIT or one of the BITS colleges, if not somewhere better. Dropping a year allows you to focus solely on your objectives, given the amount of time you get.
It may seem upsetting when the rest of your school friends get into colleges, but believe me, many of them accept colle

Both of these options have got their own pros and cons. One of my friends had taken a drop after his 12th. I would like to share his experience. He was so enthusiastic in the month of June and July, that he used to study for more than 10 hours a day. But as months went on passing, his enthusiasm, energy, determination also went on decreasing. On the other hand, one of my friends took admission in that year itself in an average, local college and now got a placement with a very good package.
Take a drop only if you are determined and pretty adamant regarding your studies. It will be fruitful only then!

It's always good to give yourself a fair and proper attempt if you want that you should not feel regret in life for the cause. If you didn't took a drop and in sometime in life you felt that you can do that at that time, then you will feel regret for that. So, it's my advice that you should take atleast one proper drop in which your everything will be of JEE and IIT, nothing more or less than that.
