Is it compulsory to appear for the IELTS exam to get admission in abroad?

<p>Another familiar doubt students have is whether IELTS is a compulsory exam or not. But remember that if you don&rsquo;t take IELTS, your chances of <a href="https://www.shiksha.com/studyabroad/student-visa-guide-applycontent5706" target="_blank" rel="noopener">getting the student visa</a> might suffer as the visa officers may not be convinced about your English proficiency without an <a href="https://www.shiksha.com/studyabroad/exams/ielts/results-and-scores" target="_blank" rel="noopener">IELTS score</a>. So it is safer to appear for IELTS and aim to score at least 6 bands overall.</p>

There are many students who find it difficult to crack the major tests to study abroad such as IELTS and TOEFL. One major question these students pose is that if these qualifying tests to study abroad are important to get admission in a foreign (English speaking) university. If you are from a non- english speaking country, it will be difficult for you to get admission in a University in an English speaking country without IELTS or TOEFL. The aim of asking for IELTS and TOEFL score is to make sure that the candidate can understand, read, write and speak English in an academic context. There are certain Universities and institutes that provides breather to the candidates. For example, in the Northwestern University Chicago, IELTS or TOEFL scores are not compulsory for the students applying for undergraduate courses who have completed at least three to four years of secondary education in English and have a score of 650 or above on the Critical Reading section of the SAT Reasoning Test. There are many Universities that make IELTS or TOEFL scores optional for the students who had their language of instruction English in their secondary school. Again, if you are from a non-English speaking country and have completed few years of full time studies in an English speaking country, you will be exempted from providing IELTS/TOEFL score. Also there are certain universities that exempt students from taking the tests if the top authorities from the last graduate school candidate attended certifies that the medium of instruction was English. However, the rules differ from country to country. The major English speaking counties like the US, the UK, Australia and Canada generally don’t compromise on the IELTS or TOEFL scores. Again, the score levels for each institute varies. While some Universities and institutes ask for high scores in IELTS and TOEFL for certain courses, the score requirements will be much lesser in other institutes.
