Is it compulsory to join a coaching center to get a good rank in GATE 2017 or can I get it through self-study?

I have appeared for GATE 2016 and scored 18 marks without the help of any coaching center. I have completed my BE. I am financially weak, so I can’t afford a coaching institute.
