Yes, JIPMER Puducherry is a government institute. It is an Institute of National Importance (INI) and a tertiary care referral hospital under the direct administrative control of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, and Indian Government, with autonomy to run its internal administration. JIPMER was established in 1823 as the 'Ecole de Medicine de Pondicherry' by the French government to train French citizens and local residents in medicine.
