It is important, as many good colleges take MAT score. But, it is not compulsory as well as not the only way to get into MBA colleges.

Talking about MAT, a candidate must score 600+ composite score to get a call from good B-school accepting MAT. And, yes, you can apply for various colleges even after scoring less than 600 marks, but it won't make any sense.
