In Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, India, there is a public university called Mahatma Gandhi Kashi Vidyapith. Originally founded on February 10, 1921, under the name Kashi Vidyapith, it was subsequently renamed and is currently run by the Uttar Pradesh government. 'University' status was granted to it in 1974 as Deemed to be University, and in 2009 it was granted State University status. Across six regions, the university is home to more than 400 affiliated colleges. With hundreds of thousands of students from both urban and rural areas, it is one of the biggest state universities in Uttar Pradesh.
