It is if you are doing it right. Mining engineering is a cross discipline programme with a little bit of civil, mechanical, geological, and chemical, followed by lots of fluids mechanics (ventilating mines) and a * ton of rock mechanics. You also have to learn some power and drainage as well as materials handling. If you go to the right school that is. Meeting grads from a lot of schools and working with them has allowed me to make a decent list of worthless mining engineering universities in the US and some outside the US.
