It is if you are doing it right. Mining engineering is a cross discipline programme with a little bit of civil, mechanical, geological, and chemical, followed by lots of fluids mechanics (ventilating mines) and a * ton of rock mechanics. You also have to learn some power and drainage as well as materials handling. If you go to the right school that is. Meeting grads from a lot of schools and working with them has allowed me to make a decent list of worthless mining engineering universities in the US and some outside the US. It can be hard but it's more about practical real world problem solving which just takes time to learn. If you want to pursue this as a profession find a school that has a decent experimental mine so you can get hands on experience. Where I went they have master and doctorate degrees for explosive engineering and it's not just classroom theoretical lectures ad nauseum, you will have labs where you test theories with real explosives.
