Optometry is a specialised health care profession that involves examining the eyes and related structures for defects or abnormalities. Optometrists are health care professionals who typically provide comprehensive primary eye care. An optometrist is an eye doctor that can examine, diagnose, and treat your eyes.

An ophthalmologist is a medical doctor who can perform medical and surgical interventions for eye conditions.

An optometrist is a doctor of optometry (O. D. ), and not a medical doctor. She/he has to work through various vision therapies to treat abnormalities, and can prescribe drugs for the eyes. If surgery is required, the patient is sent to an ophthalmologist (M. D).
