Periyar University was established by the Government of Tamil Nadu in 1997. The University Grants Commissions (UGC) conferred 2f status in 1998 and 12 (B) status in 2005 to the University. It is accredited by National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) with grade 'A'. There are 105+ colleges affiliated with the university. Along with this, Periyar University has a PG Extension Centre at Dharmapuri with 9 departments.
