Is Ph.D. compulsory for NET?

No, it is not compulsory in many universities as they conduct their own Doctor of Philosophy entrance exam followed by interviews or counseling. And if you are National Eligibility Test qualified then you will be exempted from the entrance exam. However, top institutes prefer candidates with National Eligibility Test/State Eligibility Test certificates. Also, the National Eligibility Test/State Eligibility Test is compulsory for lecturership eligibility till now. A Doctor of Philosophy is mandatory for Assistant Professor in University that is at the Post-graduation level from 1st July 2023. A doctor of Philosophy is mandatory for Assistant Professor in Promotion. University Grant Commission-National Eligibility Test will remain the eligibility criteria for Assistant Professors.
