No, it's necessary. You can even opt for an MA in Sanskrit without having a degree in BA Sanskrit. A recognised bachelor's degree in a relevant discipline is enough. No doubt, studying Sanskrit at school or UG level will give you a strong base for further studies, it also depends on one's interests
