It was established in 1917 as the Government Engineering College, and is the fifth engineering college to be established in the country. UVCE is one of the most prestigious engineering colleges in India, and is known for its excellent academic reputation and placement record.</p><p data-sourcepos="3:1-3:308">UVCE is funded by the Government of Karnataka, and its fees are significantly lower than those of private engineering colleges. It is also one of the few engineering colleges in India that is vested with the status of a university, and has autonomy on the lines of the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs).</p></div>
