The VELS School of Maritime Studies (SMS) at VELS University does not appear to be explicitly categorized as either a Tier 1 or Tier 2 institute.

However, the search results indicate that VELS SMS has been awarded a Grade A1 rating by the Ministry of Shipping, Government of India, which suggests it is a highly regarded and top-performing maritime institute.

Additionally, in the 2023 rankings of B.Sc. Maritime Science colleges in Tamil Nadu, VELS SMS is ranked #2 out of the colleges listed.

It is likely considered a top-tier maritime institute in India, even if an official Tier 1 or Tier 2 categorization is not provided.

This suggests it is not a top-tier programme in terms of placements.

The search results do not mention VELS School of Maritime Studies being ranked highly or considered a premier institution for marine engineering education in India. The focus seems to be more on the admission requirements and
