my friend cleared the indian maritime university exam . Now he is telling me that he would be now selected for merchant navy. is it true?

Yes He is eligible for the Deck Cadet's Course. The University would allot him some colleges from which you have to choose. For the B.Sc Nautical Science he has to complete 1 year college training followed by 24 months of sea time. After completion he would be eligible for the 2nd Mates Exam.
