Make him give both the JEE Mains paper, as only that marks will be considered which is best out of the two papers. This way if his performance is low in Jan paper he could improve his performance, but if his performance is good then he has another chance to score more.

In most of the schools, syllabus is completed in the month of December. He should give the JEE in month of December as he will get the idea of the level of paper. If he don't perform well In the January Exam, then he can prepare well for the April Exam of JEE and he will also get a second chance to perform well in the same year. Best of Luck to Your son for JEE.

You must ask him to give both of them. Because, the seat allocation is now based upon the best amongst the two. He has opportunity twice to perform his best.

Good question, first attempt Mains in January after the performance, and then decide it.
