Mr Popatlal acted as a judge for the beauty contest. There were four participants, viz. Ms Daya, Ms Madhuri, Ms Babita and Ms Anjali. Mrs Popatlal, who was very anxious about the result, asked him about it as soon as he was back home. Mr Popatlal just told that the one who was wearing the yellow saree won the contest. When Mrs Popatlal pressed for further details, he elaborated as follows:

  • All of them were sitting in a row.
  • All of them wore sarees of different colours, viz. green, yellow, white red.
  • There was only one runner-up and she was sitting beside Ms. Anjali.
  • The runner-up was wearing the green saree. Ms Babita was not sitting at the ends and was not the runner-up.
  • The winner and the runner-up are not sitting adjacent to each other.
  • Ms Anjali was wearing white saree.

We get the following table of earnings:

Persons

Win Total

Average

P

36 * 150 + 14 * 100 = 6800

136

Q

34 * 150 + 21 * 100 = 7200

131

R

23 * 150 + 36 * 100 = 6850

116

S

30 * 150 + 30 * 100 = 6000

100

Now we can see that the largest difference

= Maximum – Minimum = Rs. 7500 – Rs. 6800

= Rs. 700
