The study of mathematics is quite important both, at the basic level (taught at universities) and in its applied form (taught at engineering colleges).
Gender(Male/Female) is not important to decide for a career option.
There are various course options that a maths(12th) student can take as a career:

For seeking admissions into the IITs, you need to clear the JEE Advance examination.
JEE Advanced 2014 Eligibility Criteria:
*Only the top 1,50,000 candidates who qualify in the Paper 1 of JEE Main 2014 are eligible to appear for the JEE Advanced 2014.
*These candidates include students from all categories
*Candidates must be born on or after October 01, 1989 (after October 01, 1984 for SC/ST/PwD candidates)
*Candidates must be in the top 20 percentile of their respective boards and categories
*Candidates must have secured 60% (55% for SC/ST/PD) in their Class XII or equivalent examination if they have passed for the first time.
JEE Main eligibility:
The basic criteria to be eligible for JEE main is 12th or higher secondary education with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics amongst the science subjects studied.

IIT Kanpur is one of the top colleges in India. Mostly aspirants who want to become engineer in India their first choice are IITs.
For admission in UG courses in IITs first you have to clear JEE(Main) because Only the top 150000 candidates (including all categories) based on their scores in Paper-1 of JEE (Main) will be eligible to appear in JEE (Advanced)
After that in JEE (Advanced) your rank should be between 100-200 for main branches like cse , ece ,mechanical in IIT Kanpur.
These are the few branches rank
Last year opening rank for CSE in IIT Kanpur is 120.Last year opening rank for Electrical Engineering in IIT Kanpur is 181
Its only possible if you start study in class 10th because questions in JEE(Main) & JEE(Advanced) are based on your basic concepts of class 11th & 12th.
You can also join some good coaching if you are sure that you are able to get good marks in 10+2 because your rank in JEE(Main) also depends on your 10+2 marks.
