Hello, sir. Every university has rules regarding course deadlines. Some universities have a 5-year time limit to complete graduation. In this period, one needs to clear all semesters and submit required assignments and projects. You need to inquire at the university where he was studying if he can continue his degree course. He might have to register in order to finish his course at his college or university. Otherwise, he may be required to reapply for admission to this course. This will be determined by university policies and the timing of his discontinuing his studies.

Hello Shreeja Nair, different universities have different rules for KTs. But I think that you will be allowed to proceed to sixth term even if you have some backlogs. But try to clear all backlogs. It will affect your final year score as you may not get time to study subjects in that year.
