While licensing requirements may vary slightly by state, the BLS reported that most require licensees to possess a high school Diploma or equivalent, be at least 16 years of age, and hold a certificate or degree from an approved cosmetology program. Common topics in both programs include hair cutting, styling and coloring. Students usually gain supervised hands-on experience servicing clients in a salon setting. Graduates of these programs need to get licensed to practice as a hair stylist or barber. This entails meeting age requirements and passing state exams.
