The AEEE is a university level entrance examination and is conducted in multiple phases every year. DMER Chennai has allowed free exit only after Round-I of Tamil Nadu NEET PG counselling. Candidates who participate in Round-2, the mop-up round, and stray vacancy round are not allowed to make a free exit. If thet do not join the allotted institite, their Registration fee, security deposit and tuition fees will be forfeited by the counselling conducting body.

National Board of Examinations (NBE) conducts DNB PDCET counselling for seat allotment. For some exams, the exam conducting body is different than the counselling body. For an example, in case of  NEET PG, NEET SS. These exams are conducted by NBE but counselling is conducted by Medical Counselling Committee (MCC). In case of DNB PDCET, both the exam conducting body and counselling agency is same, i.e NBE. DNB PDCET counselling is conducted online for seat allotment for admission to various post Diploma DNB courses.

The NIDs offer a full-time B.Des programme of 4-year duration, and a full-time M.Des programme of two-and-half years duration. 

The institute, in addition, also offers a PhD program. The programme can be pursed full-time or part-time. 

Admission to the design courses at the NID is conducted through a Design Aptitude Test (DAT). The exam comprise DAT Prelims and DAT Mains.

The final result or merit list is prepared by giving weightage to DAT Prelims and DAT Mains.
