Engineering Services Examination is conducted annually for selection of officers for the engineering services that meet the technical and managerial functions in various fields of Engineering of the Government of India. Like in most countries, the Government of India recruits its civil servants and officials on the basis of merit, and middle management positions in the bureaucracy are filled through competitive exams. Many candidates take these exams, competing for limited posts. IES officers are selected by the union government on the recommendations made by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC). A combined three-stage competitive examination (comprising five tests), called the Engineering Services Examination (ESE), is conducted by the UPSC for recruitment to the Indian Engineering Services. ESE is considered as one of the toughest examinations in India due to fewer posts with a selection ratio of 0.00275 (based on 2010 statistics) and due to its technical nature. Most IES officers are graduates of premier colleges like IITs, NITs, IIITs and Indian Institute of Science. Owing to highly competitive selection procedure, IES officers carry high respect and status and are mandated to manage and execute activities in diverse technical and managerial fields.

It's very nice to hear from you that you are interested in working as R&D engineer or teaching or entrepreneur. I must congratulate you for not thinking of joining any company as an employee Great! Firstly to join an organisation in their Research and Development Department you must do your graduation and then your post graduation and if possible also doctoral thesis that is Ph.D. If you want to go into teaching line you will have to do your engineering graduation or post graduation if you want to teach in a college. Also pursue your Ph.D. if you want to progress in your career as a teacher in college. As an entrepreneur you can make a successful entry even after completion of the Diploma without any for the studies. Entrepreneurship is a state of mind and it does not require even a formal education. The best example is Mr Dhirubhai Ambani who had almost no formal education but he has built a company Reliance Industries Limited which is now the biggest in India. I would be very happy if you choose to be an entrepreneur rather than be in teaching or in R&Positions. Anyway it is for you to decide and choose. My best wishes for whichever path you choose.
