Linguists are typically human, so for most linguists the most important things include family, friends, keeping a roof over their heads, getting enough food, being basically healthy, feeling in control of their own lives
To the extent that linguists differ from other people, they attach a higher importance to language than other people tend to. First, they spend more time thinking about it. Second, many linguists care more about preserving threatened languages. Some linguists might attach more importance to things in my second paragraph than things in my first paragraph. That can often lead them to do good work; it sometimes makes for a less happy family life, however. Proper funding for our projects. In terms of the subject matter involved, it depends on what your interests are. Linguistics is such a broad discipline, with so many branches, that no linguist will give you a single answer to that. As someone who is also interested in socio-linguistics, I think it is important to understand how language, especially minority and/or endangered languages, are a crucial part of one communities culture, legacy and identity.
