for self-study, you can start with a book "The wonder that was India" by A.L.Basham.It gives you the groundwork for the Ancient Indian Culture, with a glimpse of the Indian Mythology, and the Vedas. Then, to go deeper into the intellectual aspects of Hindu philosophy, read "The Hindu way of Life" by Dr.S.Radhakrishnan. He has also written "The Principle Upanishads."
You can also go through "Geeta Rahasya" by Lokmanya Tilak.This will give you an in-depth idea about the various religious criptures, apart from Bhagvad Geeta proper.
For a lighter, but very informative reading on the spiritual life and aspects of Indian saints, you can go through "Autobiography of a Yogi" by Paramhansa Yogananda, also available in Hindi and many other languages.
For Indian Mythology proper, you can refer to annual numbers of KALYAN, published by Geeta Press,Gorakhpur.
Please remember, in essence, there are only three Vedas-Rig,ajur and Saam. Atharva Veda is an upa-veda.Hence , traditionally, we do Swaaha for the first three, and Namah for the fourth one, giving it an equivalent respect.
Rigveda is the earliest and is the purest form of human feelings given out in a poetic form.Yajurveda is Yajan i.e.lengthy discourses on the Karmkaanda,i.e. the processes involved in performing the rituals (this was developed indue course of time when the ancient Aryans were somewhat established). Saamaveda is the appreciation and praise of the deities in a musical form.Atharva veda contains the various magical and sorceric practices to ward off evil intentions of other people (this was when the Aryans developed prosperity, and hence competition and jealousy were developing).
Vedas are divided into Samhita (mantras), Brahman (spiritual interpretations),Aaranyak(etailed commentaries and analyses, fit only to be read in the forests by those who have left their families,i.e. who are in their Vaanprastha stage ), and Upanishads (Vedanta, i.e. the essence of the Vedas). In fact, the essence of Vedas lies in the Bhagvad Geeta.
