To study for the PTE exam at home, you need to first analyse at what level of English proficiency you already are. This you can analyse by taking existing PTE mock tests or practice tests availble on the official website. These tests will help you analyse how many efforts do you have to make in solving questions and what is your average time for solving them. 

Upon getting to know your strengths and weaknesses in the academic English language, you can prepare a study timetable and work specifically on your weak areas first and then go on with preparing for the already strong areas. This way, you won't panic even if you have very less time at hand to take the exam at the last minute - if for some reason you have to prepone your exam date.
