Have a look at your syllabus first since every university follows a slightly different syllabus. My college follows The DU syllabus. In 1st semester, you have Indian classical and European classical literature. To get background of English literature and different time periods you can refer to the OXFORD history of English literature and to get used to the basic terms use glossary of Literary terms by M. H Abrams. For the text prescribed, you can visit project Gutenberg YOU will find most of the texts there. We read Abhijnana Shakuntalam by Kalidas translated by Arthur W Ryder, Homer's Iliad translated by Alexander Pope and satires by Horace, all available on project Gutenberg.
