You have got a very decent score in JEE Mains. It is expected that the cut-off would be between percentile figures of 75 and 80 and hence with this you will definitely become eligible to appear for JEE Advanced and also eligible to seek admission in NIT, but whether you will get admission in NIT or not will depend on how many with better percentile than you seek admission for the course and the NIT that you desire. His percentile is too low to get admission in any good engineering college with a specified branch, I would suggest you to ask him to prepare for the exam again that will be held in April and best of two scores will be counted, so it's the best chance for him to improve his score.
