Although 6.5 is not poor, it is mediocre enough to get you a call from IIM for admisisons. If you clear the CAT exam and do well in the personal interview phase, you can get into the top IIMs, regardless of your CGPA. Since most management universities accept applicants with a 6.5 CGPA, you shouldn't worry about your score.

The first step towards preparation for the CAT exam is to understand the syllabus and pattern of the exam. This is because, once you understand the CAT syllabus and exam pattern, you can plan your study strategy accordingly. Studying I. T. in my first year in a college in Pune, I keep track of the placements every year. The placements in my college for both CS and I. T. are believed to be the best in the city and no company which comes to our campus has any criteria which says that only CS students are allowed to appear for their aptitude tests and subsequent interviews. Also, if I. T. students have as much or more knowledge and expertise in programming and software development than CS students, I don't see any reason to distinguish between the two branches. This is a preconceived notion which needs to be removed.
