The Maharashtra government already lodged criminal offences against the persons holding fake degrees of Chandra Mohan Jha University (CMJU). Minister of state for higher and technical education DP Sawant made this announcement on the floor of legislative assembly. On June 4, TOI had exposed the CMJU's modus operandi and how it 'sold' thousands of fake degrees to students across the country, including over 4,000 PhDs sitting, for anywhere between Rs2 lakh and Rs5 lakh.
The UGC also took cognisance of large-scale irregularities committed by the CMJU and constituted an expert committee to inquire into the allegations. The panel led by Tezpur Central University (Assam) vice-chancellor Mihir Kanti Chaudhuri comprising nine members, will probe into irregularities of CMJU, sources from Shillong informed.
Shillong: The first private university of Meghalaya, the CMJ University's offices were raided by officials from the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) on Thursday night, police said. "We raided the university following a court order," a CID official said.
The raid followed an FIR lodged by the Meghalaya Governor's Secretariat against the CMJ University and its Chancellor Chandra Mohan Jha for alleged lapses and fraud involving fake degrees for students. Jha is presently in Bihar attending a marriage, police said. The CMJ University hit media headlines after Governor RS Mooshahary, who is also the university's visitor, exposed various irregularities in its functioning.
Established in 2009, the university has created a record of sorts by awarding Ph.D. degrees to as many as 434 candidates in 2012-13 academic year, even as only 10 of its faculty members have doctorates.
