Any Diploma holder takes 10+ years to reach to the level of Assistant Engineer after joining as Junior Engineer on completion of Diploma in Engineering, whereas graduate engineers start career as Assistant Engineer. Therefore, for long term career growth, it will be better if you take lateral entry
