Branch matters when the college is bad. But here both the colleges are better in terms of placements, faculties and extra activities. Faculties of EEE are good in both but this branch is popular in NIT, Surathkal due to better placement cell and faculties than that in NIT, Trichy and CSE in NIT, Trichy is more popular than that in NIT, Surathkal.
But when it comes to student culture, campus life and location of campus NITK is miles ahead of NITT.

Both are good, depends on which branch you get. You could also choose depending on whether you might experience homesickness and all that. I know that the second factor is a trivial one but worth giving a second thought.

As per ranking of the NITs, NITT stands in the first place followed by NITK. Both the colleges are extremely good. That doesn't mean that you wouldn't have any problems at all in these institutes. Every institute has pros and cons. Considering both the colleges are really good, you can go ahead with any choice of your interest as there is not much difference between these two colleges. Ranking wise though, NITT is in the first place.

NITT and NITK both can be considered for B.Tech as they are constantly on the top of the list. You can go through the syllabus of both the colleges and decide.
