If you have no financial constraints, you may pursue further education on your own. However, you must do both, such as seek higher school and work as an assistant cinematographer to develop contacts and acquire experience, which will also provide you with financial assistance.

It would be better to do a good Diploma/Degree level course and then take up a job. If there is an inclination towards academics then higher studies must be selected otherwise, a job is better when it comes in a good way.
