Should placements be the no. 1 criteria for shortlisting colleges? How can one trust placement data published on college websites?

Good question! First of all, see in which of the following categories you fall based on your reason to join the college: 1. You want to take up job in your dream company. 2. You want to learn through good quality research projects and then go for Masters in research. 3. You want a good name on your resume and good recommendations so you can join an MBA college further. 4. You just wanna have fun. If you fall under the 1st category then definitely placements should be the number 1 criteria for shortlisting a college. Why? Because the sole reason why you want to join a college in the first place is that you want to earn for yourself in future. Now, how can you trust the college website for not being biased? Govt college websites are not expected to be biased because they don't really need your money to survive. However, I would say, you can't really trust private colleges in this sense. So how will you get the real data? If you know an alumnus of the college then nothing can be better than that. If you don't know, use the "theory of six degrees of separation by Frigyes Karinthy" to get to it. Still, if you can't, there are a number of student groups on facebook you can join and get the real data or you can connect with students on Linkedin. The answer is generally a big 'NO'. The placement data of most of the colleges is totally wrong. You can trust only the data given by reputed institutions like IITs, NITs or other CFTIs. Even while viewing these reports, you should be careful. Most of the local colleges twist and turn the placement data or give insufficient information to judge their placements or maybe some might give false information. But while comparing reputed institutes you can use it as one of the criteria. Mainly, see if the institutions are well reputed, check with reliable sources. If possible, talk with students currently studying there cause they know the best about the institution. And you should consider many factors while taking admission other than placements. So do proper research, read reviews on reliable sites and try to get as much as information as possible. So make a proper choice while considering all the factors. All the best!

There are many factors from which you can short list any college. Shortlisting the college are one of the most important things in your life which you cannot mess it up because it only decides the future of your life for mostly. There are many factors for shortlisting colleges and these factors are the most important things and due to the only one factor you can change your mind or your mind can be changed about the college that you are going to choose and they are as follows: 1. Placements everybody is always looking for good placements and the first thing they checked in a college is how the placements of the college are. 2. The facilities or the infrastructure provided by the college are also the most important thing in shortlisting the colleges. 3. Faculty of the college you are choosing also has a major role in short listing the College. And, if you are going with option one, then you are always looking for the companies all the foreign companies that comes for the placement in the college and provides how much salary to the student or the highest package provided to the student in your chosen branch. There is no way to trust placement data published on the college websites but it is only the thing that you have to confirm your queries about the college. There is only the other way to confirm the data provided on the website is through asking questions on the shiksha.com or Quora. Hope it helps.
