Sports not only keeps a person fit and fine but also develop the qualities like team building, believe in one self and all these qualities in total helps to develop a person, apart from this, sports is also a good career option, gone are the days when only cricket used to be the only sports which generates lots of interest, now a days sports like boxing, lawn tennis, badminton, athletics are also equally famous.
Well, first of all let me congratulate MSK for a good topic. Yes it should be an important part of the curriculum. Right from wardha commission to National Policy on Eudcation, 1986 there were several recommendations on including sports as one subject. Since literacy was more important then than the focus, it recommended having one period for games every day and insisted on compulsory participation (10% of the school time was to cater to the sports and games) Since no marks were awarded it was not followed strictly. In 1995 the new education policy came into force and since then sports started to become a part of curriculum in CBSE schools and ICSE schools. Sports quota was introduced in universities and in state and central government jobs . The National curriculum frame work 2005 has re evaluated the entire scenario and started Continuous comprehensive evaluation CCE and as a part of it a childs performance in Sports is also a component of physical health. Having sports as a regular subject helps not only in gaining physical fitness but also gives the required agility to join defence , police force and in disaster rescue team . I feel , wareness has to be generated among teachers and parents to look beyond the career as as an engineer or a business executive but also in service sector.

Thank you for your comment Gautam Joshi I would like to say that, in the present day scenario sports is not the activity to pursue during free time, but if taken seriously under proper guidance it promises a great career. The good part about sports in India today is now a days apart from Cricket other sports like athletics, tennis etc are also gaining equal importance.

Aneeket you have given answer in your own query, physical education and sports education are different, by sports we mean authentic sports like football cricket, baseball etc, under this student need to study about the sports in detail and they also have to play it, it will solve 2 purpose simultaneously: 1.It will help the student to know more detailed information about the particular sport. 2.It will help to popularize that sport as well. In sports education emphasis should be more on practically playing the sport rather than knowing it theoretically.

Agreed! Apart from this, Physical education is still considered as a 6th Subject in many schools and even if few schools take it as a proper subject then most of the colleges don't accept it in best 5; though they offer a sports quota.

Govind_S I totally agree with you, this is the only reason why sports should be included in education, because most of the students do not even know the basic knowledge about any sport other than cricket. If they study about different sports and when they actually play, I am sure it will generate enough of curiosity among students to play that game, and ultimately taking it as a career.

I think now the time has come, when the government should make sports necessary at least till 10th class. We are a second most populated country in the world and still me manage to win only 1 gold medal in Olympics till date, so proper coaching and advice to children right from beginning will surly going to change this scenario. Government should open a university which exclusively offers course in sports domain only.

Well a very nice discussion started. Even I would say that a career in sports is a good option. Some of the career options are Sports Journalism, Sports management, Physiotherapy (very demanding profession in the sports domain) etc. Waiting for comments from experts like Nikhlesh Mathur Arvind Joshi245 arun dev Gautam Joshi Excel Govind_S Gomtis Corner girishseshmani Prof Garain PhD MAYUR DESHMUKH Kishore9209196744 and all the other community members.

I agree. Sports is a very important part of child development and cannot be left out at school level. India has such a huge population and yet, there are few sportsmen that have made a mark at the world level. It happens because parents are not aware about the opportunities available for their children in sports and do not know where to seek proper training for their wards. Sports at school level will help us find out gems, increase overall fitness level in our children, as well as stimulate social and physical development of children.
