    If you want to pick up the concepts and principles, but don't have time to go back to school, start with the Open University's series of short books on: -
    Biological oceanography
    Ocean circulation
    Seawater
    The ocean basins
    Waves, tides and shallow-water processes
    For people with some scientific training who're curious about oceanography, I recommend: -
    Ocean fluid dynamics: Start with Marshall & Plumb's "Atmosphere, Ocean and Climate Dynamics." There are two supporting websites: MIT's Open Courseware site is at http://ocw.mit.edu/courses/earth.
