    In the first year of engineering, the subjects are not related to any particular branch or department, but are more like general engineering. These subjects are to be known by every engineer, irrespective of their branch. They include Basic Electronics, Basic Electrical, Programming with C/C+, Basic Mechanical, Engineering Mechanics, Engineering Drawing and Engineering Mathematics to name a few. Depending on the college/university, there might be subtle changes to the list; but broadly, the first year is meant to be formative period, to make students ready for next 3 years. Hope that helps.

    Syllabus may differ among NITs but in case of NIT Hamirpur the subjects are.
    1) Math (matrices, determinant, calculus, fourier series, differential equations, complex number, )
    2) PHYSICS (Semiconductor, superconductivity, p properties of matter, s structure and interaction of matter)
    3) CHEMISTRY (polymers, composite material, spectroscopy, nano chemistry, corrosion and control, lubricant)
    4) COMMUNICATION SKILLS (job application and interview, group discussion, process of communication, m meeting, presentation skills)
    5) ENGINEERING DRAWING (orthographic projection, s section of solid, )
    And some other subjects related to your branch.
