What are the course options available for me to become a cartoonist?

Hi Anindita, Professional qualifications become secondary requirement, when it comes to building a career as a cartoonist. Anyone, who is innovative, good at communicating his/her thoughts through sketches, and has a good sense of humor, can try his/her luck in this field. Interested individuals can opt for graphic designing or sketching courses at graduation or post graduation diploma levels. For cartooning, knowledge of animation is highly useful, particularly when one wants to enter the electronic media. The profession of a cartoonist has emerged as a lucrative career option in India. One can work as a political cartoonist or a comic cartoonist in any newspaper or magazine, or can seek employment opportunities in animation houses. Nowadays, almost every newspaper reserves some space for cartoons. Keeping in view the demand of cartoonists in print and electronic media, many institutes running courses in animation have started emphasizing on the sketching skills of their students. Anindita, If you're creative, you can always consider going for Design and Animation. This is a field where nobody cares for your qualification, they only see if you can do quality work. In fact, the University Model has not succeeded in any Skill field across the world. A good mentor and wise selection of courses with a good school, followed by diligent learning, would get you a head start in your career. However, you must check your suitability for this field. Animation is an art form and a very demanding career. It has ample opportunities for the creatively talented people. Opportunities lie in UI Design, Graphic Design, Storyboarding, Animation Design, Game Design, 3D Modelling, Texturing and Lighting, Dynamics and VFX and of course animation (2D and 3D). Of course at the top of the pile lies Concept Designing - these people are required by Event Companies, Animation Studios, VFX Studios, and of course Game Studios. However, choosing between these must be done after seeing your performance in each of these. So going for a generic course covering all or most of these would be the best way to get started in these careers. Typically you should have good sketching skills to be able to make a sound career in this (if you work hard you can improve your drawing skills tremendously). Reputed cartoonists are novelists and columnists also. They have talents that are of different kinds. As it is not exactly a drawing of something, your effort is also in giving it a caption. You have to possess excellent political awareness and humor and an understanding of men and matters.
