What are the prospects and salary one can get in software testing? Is it advisable for electronic engg?

I am an electronic engineer and wants to go in software industry. So, is it good to start with software testing? Should I jump into development after 1/2 years experience. What is the maximum package i will for testing after course? Please give me details as I have to start immediately.
