what are the steps to be taken to get a good start in IT field??

Hi.. im currently in sem 8 Comp Engg (mumbai university).. my engg agg is very low along with a 2 year gap... SSC== 80% , HSC==65% , engg till sem 7=52%,,,, im also doing a course on DotNet from NIIT... Please tell me what should be my next steps for a career in development or testing....Thank you!
