To crack CAT, either you can do self study or you can enroll in coaching classes. It totally depends on you. Some of the good books for improving English are Wrenn & Martin English Grammar book, Word Power Made Easy and any other book which has variety of RCs and other type of quetions.

In order to enhance your vocab go for Word Power Made Easy by Norman Lewis
It is brilliant book that helps you build a strong vocab. I would suggest you to buy this book and keep reading it again.
The book does not forces you to memorize any word, it explains the origin and history behind the word
