First, you need to appear for civil services exam conducted by UPSC, then according to your rank, you will be posted as an IAS or IPS or IRS officer. If you want to work in income tax department, then opt for IRS.

An income tax officer is someone who deals with income tax matters concerning the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT). The CBDT is a department of the Central Government of India. Class I officers of CBDT comes from Indian Revenue Service (IRS). IRS is the administrative revenue service of the Central Civil Services of the Government of India.
