What does a "lateral entry" actually means?

What does a "lateral entry" means? i often see criterion for lateral entry in different private institutions. but i dont even know what do a lateral entry actually is! so help.!

Lateral Entry is for diploma holders, those who do 3 years diploma well approved by Govt. norms, and then give their own entrance exam for admission into engineering colleges. And as they have studied 3 years after 10th, they are directly given admission in 2nd year of engineering. please close this
