Plastics industry is in major demand and majority of research is focused on developing new polymers. Plastics are literally everywhere you look. Some plastics called engineering plastics are specially used because of their excellent properties. They are good replacement for metals as they are easy to use, cheap and can be prepared easily. So I would suggest if you want to pursue a career in polymer field, go ahead, don't look back. In this field, you can start your own company. Do a career in research. You can work in marketing also. The payscale will be high enough as you gain experience.

Chemical engineering has better job opportunities than plastic engineering. Being a plastic engineer will limit your field. But as a chemical engineer, there are many options available for you.

See, if you want to do job for the lifetime, then I'll prefer you to opt for the chemical engineering but if you want to start your business after doing job for sometime, then you should opt for the plastic engineering.
