It was founded on July 18, 1946, during the British Raj, and was named after its founder, Sir Hari Singh Gour, who was a distinguished lawyer, jurist, educationist, social reformer, poet, and novelist. The university is the oldest university in the state of Madhya Pradesh. Dr. Hari Singh Gour University is known for its contributions to education, particularly in the field of law. Hari Singh Gour was the first Vice-Chancellor of the University of Delhi and the first Dean of the Faculty of Law in the University of Delhi. The university has a faculty of 292 academic staff. It is ranked #401-450 in Asian University Rankings 2023.</p>
